The National Zoological Park, commonly known as the National Zoo, is one of the oldest zoos in the United States. Founded in 1889, its mission is to "provide engaging experiences with animals and create and share knowledge to save wildlife and habitats".
The Zoo's 163-acre park in the heart of Washington, D.C., is a popular tourist destination, welcoming nearly 2 million visitors from all over the world each year. The Zoo instills a lifelong commitment to conservation through engaging experiences with animals and the people working to save them. Today, it is home to animals representing almost 400 different species and more than 2,200 animals, including some of the planet’s most critically endangered species.
